Chinese scientists sequence the genome of E. coli

BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhuanet) - Chinese scientists have completely sequenced the genome of New E.coli growing across Europe. It was announced on Saturday that the genes found in bacteria that gave resistance to eight classes of antibiotics.

Researchers from the Beijing Genomics Institute, the largest DNA sequencing, have recently discovered the genes identified in the 0104 strain of the bacterium E. coli that made it resistant to major classes of antibiotics, including sulfonamides, cephalothin, penicillin and streptomycin.

main research arm of BGI Shenzhen says this helps explain why physicians in Europe have had difficulty in combating the virus that has killed at least 19 people and left more than 1,700 patients.

BGI says the discovery could help doctors choose appropriate drugs for treatment.

Chinese researchers obtained DNA samples of bacteria from the collaboration with scientists from Germany and its genome fully sequenced in three days this week.

They are developing a diagnostic kit used to detect the bacteria and prevent the epidemic from spreading further.

Yu'an Cui, Research BGI-Huada Genomics Institute in Shenzhen, said, "We found the genes of the bacteria are nearly certain bacteria separated from a patient with HIV in Africa in 2002.

The next step for us is to develop a diagnostic reagent box as soon as possible. If we can develop the reagent box, we can monitor the surrounding environment, in addition to those affected. This can help contain the spread of bacteria. "

E. coli attacks the kidneys and can cause seizures, stroke and coma and is found mainly in cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.

Several countries have banned the import of cars from Germany and Spain due to the outbreak of E. coli.

In the last movement, Qatar has banned the importation of all vehicles from Germany and Spain.

The Qatari Supreme Council for Health says that will not hesitate to ban all European countries vegetables if necessary.
